I don't know about you, but I love movie trailers. I correct myself: I love good movie trailers. Some trailers give away too much of the movie that you know what's going to happen, others miss the awe factor to attract your attention and interest, and a few handful - for me at least - really hit the spot.
One of those that hit the mark for me was Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II. I know, I know... "everyone's interested in Harry Potter!" My argument: I never read the books. I can't read the books. No offense to J.K. Rowling, but I find too many grammatical errors in the books that I can't get past chapter 1. Yes, it's a sad, horrible fact, but my brain is trained to spot errors. (Shakes head) Let's get back to the topic! No tangents!
The trailer I saw for HPDWP2 (to be called HP7 from now on!) was on Hulu.com. I figured there'd be 2 trailers by now, so I rushed from Hulu to Trailers.Apple.com, only to be disappointed that there's only 1 trailer. (Oh well.) Naturally, it starts off with the HP theme music. My curiosity was already pulled in as the first shot of the movie shown was Snape walking through a tunnel with flashes of lightning. My brain went "uh oh... he's being sneaky," but then it turned to "what is this about?" as the second shot was of two young girls in an open field. (Keep in mind: I HAVE NEVER READ THE BOOKS!) I'm not going to walk you through the entire trailer, as my curiosity and interest was pulled in within the first - oh - 13 seconds. I'm a sucker for the bad guys in movies, and Voldemort's appearance in second 12-13 was enough for me! I love Ralph Fiennes!

I was also all smiley and giddy when I caught a glimpse of Mum Molly Weasley wielding a wand! Of course, I was beaming from ear to ear when I saw the dragon bursting from the tower floor too, but that's beside the point. I'm psyched about getting to see the happy-go-lucky Mum Weasley kick some ass! That's honestly all I've got to say about HP7's movie trailer, except to say: Go watch it if you haven't already! If you have, go watch it again! Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II is the Trailers.Apple.com version. You'll need QuickTime to watch it.
I'm going to use one of my chick flick cards! If you don't know what that is, let me inform you. Every year, I give myself 3 "chick flick" cards (mental cards, not real ones) that allow me to watch only 3 chick flicks (romantic comedies) and that no one can revoke them from me (cough cough my other half cough cough). So, if one of the chick flicks on my cards airs on TV, and I want to watch it, I get to watch it with no argument, discussion, complaint, whatever. I'm throwing out my chick flick card for... drum roll... Something Borrowed with Ginnifer Goodwin (who was on my chick flick card for He's Just Not That Into You) and Kate Hudson. The movie trailer itself gives away a bit much to the point that I know what's going to happen in the movie, at least 86% of the movie. Like I said: chick flick card! So what if it's the usual love triangle fiasco, this one happens all in the friend circle, which if you ask me hurts more than if it were just a plain old love triangle. I was bummed with the original trailer for this movie, but I was sucked back in with trailer #2! I think it was the way it started. Ya, definitely the opening sequence of the trailer. Don't believe me? Check both trailers for Something Borrowed on Trailers.Apple.com and judge them yourself. Delivery is 95% of the pull when it comes to chick flick trailers! Trust me.
Another trailer I've got to say something about: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. I have loads of pirate loving, pirate personality friends, so I should really watch my words, but what fun is that??? I love the trailer, and I know Jack Sparrow - I'm sorry! Captain Jack Sparrow - is the selling point of the movie franchise, but I would've loved to have seen more of Barbossa. Seriously! Barbossa only has a total of about 4 to 5 seconds of him in the first trailer! Also, the whole mermaid love story plot with Syrena (portrayed by the pretty Astrid Berges-Frisbey) and Philip (Sam Claflin) is a total tease in the trailers! So mean! In my honest opinion, they should've just skipped introducing the thought of a mermaid love story in the trailers. If it's in the movie, fine, but if you're going to focus everything on Cpt. Jack Sparrow in the movie trailer, don't mention or even hint at an underlying love story. There's about 4 seconds worth of Syrena and Philip, and it's such a tease!!! Don't tease me! I already want to watch the damn movie, because: (1) Orlando Bloom isn't in it (Oh, bite me.); (2) I was always fascinated by the idea of the Fountain of Youth; and (3)....
(3) Ian McShane is Blackbeard! F**k YEA!!! |
I'm seriously considering that I'm only interested in watching this movie, not for Johnny Depp, but for Ian McShane! (gasp! and I can't leave out my beloved Barbossa, played by the ever so awesome Geoffrey Rush!) If you haven't already, go check out Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides on Trailers.Apple.com!
Let me hit on the "Race" issue. I usually struggle with racial movies, because most of the time, I end up feeling really bad for the minority, whatever nationality it may be. This time, I've run into a seeming feel good racial movie trailer. First of all, the "cover picture" was the thing that pulled me in. I watched the trailer to see what it was about. Servitude, retaliation, journalism/literature; three things that just grabbed me by my shirt collar and dragged me into the "I so want to watch this" side of the fence. I may have to use up another one of my chick flick cards though, as the movie seems to be focused more on women. Oh duh! The trailer that I'm going on about is The Help. It's a DreamWorks piece, stars Emma Stone and comes out in August. If I have yet to hear about it, you more than likely have yet to hear about it as well. This could be a side story that falls into the Civil Rights Movement. It's got the feel of it at least. I say go check it out!
Another feel good movie! Wait. I may be able to place this one under "documentary"? National Geographic is coming out with The First Grader, hitting theaters May 13. The "cover pic" was confusing to me, which is good this time around, because it got my attention, making me watch the trailer!
Based on a true story, I'm a sucker for anything reading. I'm a dork, I know, but that's why I got my English Literature degree instead of a Science degree. Any way, I'm not going to explain this movie. I'm not even going to summarize it! The trailer does that on its own, if you ask me. So, just watch the trailer for The First Grader. Go! check it out!
Trust me, the cover is deceiving!
With that, boys and girls, I'm going to call it quits. I've watched too many trailers and picked 5 of my "oh I wanna watch this" trailers. I hope you do check them out and tell me what you think, tell me if you've spotted a trailer that you believe would pull me in. Just remember: I really don't do well with horror movies. Just saying!
Until next time...
